er and said he was "doing well."

Denver Broncos coach Vance Joseph said former first-round pick Paxton Lynch was "obviously motivated" by his demotion to third-string quarterback last week "and that's a good sign. He's upset and he should be upset."

Lynch might not have enough time to channel that frustration and salvage a roster spot.

Chad Kelly of Ole Miss Adidas Pekka Rinne Jersey , "Mr. Irrelevant" as the final pick of the 2017 draft, has outworked and outplayed Lynch all summer and in both of Denver's exhibition games.

He's expected to get a long look in relief of starter Case Keenum on Friday night in Washington as general manager John Elway decides whether to add a veteran backup instead.

That likely leaves Lynch with mop-up duty at best. He might even have to wait until Denver's exhibition finale at Arizona to persuade the Broncos brass to keep him around.

After leapfrogging Lynch, Kelly had another solid performance, throwing for 90 yards and a touchdown on 7-of-9 passing against Chicago before leaving a 23-10 lead to Lynch, who again faltered as the Bears came back to win 24-23 Saturday night.

Afterward, Lynch said he never wanted the No. 2 job he lost to Kelly .

"I want to be THE quarterback. I don't want to be a backup and I definitely don't want to be third-string quarterback," Lynch said. "The cards have been dealt to this point in time and I'm not quitting. I'll never quit. My mom never quit. My dad never quit. My brother never quit. I'm never going to quit and I'm working hard."

It's just not paying off for the former Memphis QB who hasn't shown the progress the Broncos expected entering his third season in the NFL even with Trevor Siemian, whom he couldn't beat out the past two summers, now playing in Minnesota.

By many measures, Lynch has actually regressed since Elway moved up to select Lynch.

He's won just one of his four NFL starts, and that was in his rookie year when he went 1-1 with two TDs and an interception. Last year, he was 0-2 with one TD and three interceptions.

In the preseason, his slide is even more dramatic:

鈥?2016: 40 for 68 for 458 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

鈥?2017: 16 for 24 for 90 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

鈥?2018: 11 for 22 for 63 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

Lynch was booed when he entered the game against the Bears at Mile High. Denver's fan base has apparently had enough of the man Elway envisioned as his next franchise quarterback.

"I feel bad for Paxton, but our fans want to win," Joseph said Ryan Miller Jersey , adding that Lynch "has to ignore it and go play. It's professional football. No one is going to hold your hand, so he has to go out there and perform."

That tough love approach is a departure from the kid-glove treatment Lynch enjoyed in the past .

Even when Lynch was having a tough time digesting the playbook and the speed of the game, unable to use proper footwork or decipher defenses to capitalize on his natural talents, the Broncos brass kept its faith in him.

With Lynch struggling this preseason, Kelly, who missed his entire rookie season last year while recovering from wrist and ankle injuries, has gone 21 of 30 for 267 yards, three TDs, an interception and two sacks.

Lynch's demotion puts him on notice with roster cuts looming.

"When I first got the news, I was pretty upset about it because I know how hard I work, I know how bad I want to play and I know how much this means to me," Lynch said. "Sometimes you go through tough tests just to take you to a whole other level. I'm taking it that way and working my butt off."

Lynch said he realizes poor quarterback play is especially untenable in Denver, where Elway and Peyton Manning won Super Bowls.

"I just haven't been playing well," he said. "That's not acceptable, especially playing quarterback here Customized Indianapolis Colts Jerseys , you've got to play well and give your team an opportunity to win every week."

Lynch insists his confidence isn't shaken.

"Yeah, if you don't believe in yourself then no one else is going to believe in you," he said. "That's what I have to do. I have to hang on that, come to work every day and get better."

MILITARY SALUTE

Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas traded his autographed jersey to a U.S. Airman who participated in USAA's "Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp" at the team's training facilities Tuesday.

In return, Thomas received a pair of military challenge coins , one from the 1st Space Battalion and another from a Chief Master Sergeant.

"It's always good to see them come out and support us, and we can support them back," Thomas said.

The ninth-year pro was the only player to receive military medallions in exchange for his jersey.

"I'm trying to decide if I they're going to travel with me for the season or they're going in the locker with me or I'm going to take them home," Thomas said. "I think I want to travel with them."

Notes: WR Carlos Henderson, who failed to report to training camp while dealing with family issues, visited general manager John Elway at team headquarters Tuesday morning.

The Browns escaped a preseason quarterback swap.

Tyrod Taylor isn't expected to miss any time 鈥?and is still in line to start the Sept. 9 season opener against Pittsburgh 鈥?after dislocating his left pinky and bruising his hand in Thursday's 5-0 win over Philadelphia.

Taylor's injury initially appeared serious after he awkwardly landed on his non-throwing hand and wrist while bracing his fall after firing an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal. He immediately grabbed his hand and ran to the sideline before being taken to the locker room for treatment and evaluation. He returned and played in three more series.

"Tyrod had a dislocated pinky but obviously they were able to get that back in place real quickly," coach Hue Jackson said on a conference call Friday. "It takes 15 seconds to do that. He has a bruised hand. He's sore. But he's going to be fine."

Taylor's hand was wrapped as he made an appearance at a men's apparel store Friday night. He was relieved the injury wasn't serious, and said he's dealing with soreness but plans to practice Saturday.

"Everything came back negative, which is a good sign and we were able to put the finger back in place," he said. "It's my left hand Youth Connor Williams Jersey , at the end of the day. So deal with it. It'll be sore for a couple of days, but it's nothing that's going to stop me."

Taylor said the doctor had some trouble putting his finger back into place.

"I tried to be tough about it," he said. "I tried not to look at it. I saw that it did dislocate, but I tried to look away and let him do his thing. They're professionals. They know what they're doing when it comes to that stuff. It didn't pop back as quickly as I wanted it to."

Jackson also said he doesn't expect rookie starting cornerback Denzel Ward to miss "much time, if any" because of back spasms. Ward, the No. 4 overall pick, got twisted while tackling Eagles tight end Zach Ertz.

Jackson said he hasn't decided if the first-team offense will play in next week's exhibition finale at Detroit. Jackson wants his starters to get as much time together as possible and is still considering playing them against the Lions.

The 29-year-old Taylor is in his first season with the Browns, who acquired him from Buffalo in a trade in March to stabilize a problematic position. Taylor will start until top overall pick Baker Mayfield is ready, and the Browns will gladly put that off until next season.

Taylor has been a model mentor to Mayfield so far, and the eight-year veteran has impressed everyone with his work ethic and attitude.

The Browns seemed caught off guard that Taylor, who stayed in the locker room for the second half on Thursday, left FirstEnergy Stadium before speaking with reporters.

Taylor did post a thank you to Cleveland fans for their prayers on Twitter and said he was "doing well."

Jackson said there was relief that Taylor wasn't more seriously hurt.

"Well, I definitely got the final thought that he was going to be fine when we decided to put him back in," Jackson said. "Obviously, when (head trainer) Joe Sheehan came back Authentic Mike Evans Jersey , he said 'Everything is fine. There are no issues. He can go back in.' Obviously, the player was very excited to go back in the game. Again, I felt he needed to, because our offensive football team at that time needed to play together.

"They needed his leadership. He needed to be out there playing with them. I think it is important for them to develop that chemistry, so I felt comfortable that when we put him back out there, things were OK. Obviously, when he was not there and he was inside before he came back, all kinds of thoughts go through your head. But I feel good about where he is and what he will be able to do in the future."

NOTES: WR Josh Gordon will participate in walk-throughs over the weekend and it's possible he'll practice. The former Pro Bowl receiver has only been allowed to attend meetings, work on the side with trainers and watch since returning from a self-imposed absence in training camp. Gordon, who was on the sideline Thursday night, has played in only 10 games over the past four seasons because of suspensions from drug violations. ... Rookie Genard Avery (hip) will be sidelined "some time" but has not been ruled out of the opener. Avery had a strip-sack on the Eagles' Nick Foles. ... Starting S Damarious Randall sat out against the Eagles after a knee locked up during warmups. Jackson said he was held out as a precaution.
